A Grand Send Off!

For you Moms and Dads I know this day may have come way too soon, but to your Europe students it was a day of much excitement and anticipation as we all finally met at the Knoxville Airport for our group checkin and our fond farewells as our departure day had FINALLY arrived!

After a flight that felt like it would never end we eventually arrived into the Munich Airport with much relief that we could now get out and about and begin our sightseeing.  I know you'll be excited to hear that there were actually "No" mishaps except for 1 lost camera.  I think the students did a wonderful job in keeping up with their stuff and following directions.  This group is really very very easy - they actually do what we ask them to do on the first request!

After a quick 45 minute train ride from the airport to the Marienplatz we finally emerged from the S-Bahn and the brilliant blue sky opened up in front of us with the spires of the Glockenspiel towering and the jousters and dancers were actually out and playing!  Mary Caroline said seeing and hearing the Glockenspiel made her officially know that she was finally in EUROPE!

Dragging our many bags across the cobbled streets made us sound like a herd of stampeding horses, but that's OK because there were MANY MANY people out and about in the Viktualienmarkt enjoying this SWELTERINGLY hot spring day (more like a Summer Day)!  My phone said it was 86 Farenheit and forecast to be even hotter tomorrow.  Guess what's NOT common in Bavaria - Air Conditioning! But our little Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt is a great little Mom and Pop hotel right in the center of the Altstadt (old town).  We can step out our front door and be in center of the things we came to see.

But that's ok, we're not going to melt because these travelers are resilient and just glad to finally be here (and off that long plane ride).

Our first order of business after unloading all of that luggage was to hop on the S-Bahn to Dachau Memorial Site where we stopped for lunch before entering the actual site.

Angie, Jere and Miss Haley had a lesson planned out for your students to reinforce what they had already been taught about the horrible atrocities that happened at this place.

After a day in the hot sun at the memorial site (the only planned activity for this day) we headed back to our hotel to freshen up a bit before our dinner at L'Osteria at the Karlsplatz very near to our hotel.  The pizzas were ENORMOUS, and we had two pizza boxes full of leftovers for midnight snacking back at our hotel.  As a reward for being stupendous travelers and so very agreeable and teachable Mrs. Mynatt paid for our entire dinner tonight!

It's been a LOOOOONG day of travel with minimal activities, some excellent learning, and topped off with a wonderful dinner.  Your students are all in their rooms tucked in and probably snoring away by now.  Tomorrow we'll be refreshed for another fun day of learning with Mike's Bike Tours of Munich - ALWAYS a hit.  Thank you Moms and Dads for sharing your young adults with us - they are wonderful people and I'm enjoying getting to know them.  See you bright and early in the morning :-)  Good night from Munich.
